Poured Concrete

western

This is a traditional method of creating structural concrete walls, using wood or steel forms to create a vertical box which defines the outer shape of the wall. Concrete, a mixture of Portland cement, aggregates and sand, is then poured into the open top of the box and vibrated to create a smooth surface. When the concrete hardens, the forms are removed leaving a solid, free-standing concrete wall.

To create a sculptured surface on the wall, the artist carves into flat sheets of polystyrene foam, which are then attached to the inside surface of the box prior to pouring the concrete. The foam is removed with the forms when the concrete wall has hardened. The sculpture surfaces are then sandblasted to reveal the aggregate.
